The two occupants of Heinz Field went down to alternate Florida coasts and came back victorious, both by the score of 26-21, and now both teams head into a bye week with national recognition.
The Pitt Panthers win over the #10 ranked South Florida Bulls was another in what's becoming
a string of nice victories over nationally ranked teams. The Panthers game winning drive spanned three plays, after USF had just taken the lead with under 5 minutes to play. The Panthers could have easily succumbed to the Bulls and their raucous Thursday night crowd, but they provided the ultimate response. Over the past two games, Shady McCoy is looking every bit like the preseason All American he was pegged as. Quarterback Bill Stull remains a work in progress, but was solid when he needed to be. Big win for the Panthers, as they move to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Big East, and have made their way back into the AP Poll at number 24. Big test for the Panthers coming up, as they travel to Annaoplis, MD to take on the Naval Academy on October 18.

The Steelers extracted a little bit of vengeance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, as they too went in front of a National TV audience, in a hostile environment, and staged a nice 4th quarter comback victory. Ben Roethlisberger easily had his best game of the season, the defense
continued to play excellent football, and Mewelde Moore played very well in a difficult situation. Roethlisberger and the Steelers are getting more national notoriety of their own, as more media pundits are touting them as the team to beat in the AFC. They go into the bye week now, with the meat of the schedule on the horizon. They should get Willie Parker and Casey Hampton back in time for the October 19th game in Cincinnati, and that will be a much needed tune up, as the schedule after Cincy features games against the Giants, @ Washington, Indy, San Diego, Cincy, @ New England, Dallas, @ Baltimore, @ Tennessee, and Cleveland. Yikes. The Steelers win coupled with the Ravens loss puts the Steelers a game and a half up on the rest of the division, but victories will be more and more difficult to come by with the upcoming schedule. More on this one later.

More on this one later.Penguins season opened with a bang, as Tyler Kennedy bookended the first of two "Premiere games" in Sweden, scoring less than a minute into the game, and then again with less than a minute remaining in overtime to give the Penguins a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators. The Sens returned the favor in the Sunday matchup, downing the Pens 3-1. Nice to see Kennedy contribute though, as he'll be one of the guys they look for to replace the scoring punch that Ryan Malone carried.
Other NFL Week 5 Observations:
Green Bay might be in trouble.
Buffalo looked pretty fraudulant.
Tennessee did not.
The Texans continue to be snakebitten.
I'm concerned about the Redskins tendency to fall behind then pick it up in the 4th quarter. I'm not sure how long they can continue to overcome late deficiets.
What's going on with Seattle? Not a good swan song for Mike Holmgren.
I have an interesting theory on Kyle Orton that I have to look further into. Once I do so, I'll post whether or not I was correct.
6-5-2 so far this week in picks. Cmon Saints, help me get my season record back to .500!!
